Direct Ireland-EU shipping continues to grow after Brexit with Hibernia Line

The new Hibernia Line introduces an additional freight option between continental Europe and the UK. Brexit has permanently reshaped the movement of goods between continental Europe and Ireland. For many years, the Calais–Dover land bridge served as a crucial route for freight travelling between the European mainland and Ireland. However, the introduction of new customs requirements and border procedures exposed the vulnerabilities of relying on the UK as a transit corridor.

As businesses adapted to the post-Brexit environment, the growing administrative burden including customs declarations, safety and security documentation, and port clearance procedures prompted logistics providers to seek more efficient alternatives.

The rise of direct ferry routes to Ireland

In response, direct ferry connections between continental Europe and Ireland have experienced significant growth. Although these services often come with higher ticket prices and more limited schedules, the operational advantages have proven difficult to ignore.

By avoiding transit through the United Kingdom, transport operators can reduce administrative complexity and streamline supply chains. As a result, direct shipping routes have become an increasingly attractive solution for businesses looking to maintain reliable and efficient freight movements between Ireland and the European Union.

Today, several ferry operators offer direct connections between European and Irish ports, and the sector continues to expand to meet rising demand.

Hibernia Line introduces a new Boulogne-sur-Mer – Cork connection

The latest addition to the market comes from Irish start-up operator Hibernia Line, which is launching a new ferry service linking Boulogne-sur-Mer in France with Ringaskiddy, Cork in Ireland.

The service will initially be operated by the vessel St Patrick, formerly part of the Tallink Group fleet. The ship is expected to begin operations later this month, providing a new direct freight link between France and Ireland.

A second vessel, St Kilian, will join the service shortly afterwards. Together, the two ships will offer up to six evening sailings per week in each direction, increasing capacity and providing greater flexibility for freight operators.

A welcome revival for the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer

The launch of this route represents a long-awaited revival for the Port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, which has been seeking new opportunities to strengthen its position within European maritime logistics.

At the same time, the service provides another valuable option for businesses facing growing demand for direct transport links between Ireland and continental Europe. With trade volumes continuing to increase, additional capacity and route diversity are becoming increasingly important for maintaining resilient supply chains.

Strengthening Ireland’s direct connections with Europe

The success of direct ferry routes since Brexit demonstrates a clear shift in transport patterns across the region. What was once considered an alternative solution has become a strategic component of Ireland’s logistics network.

With new operators such as Hibernia Line entering the market and expanding available capacity, the future looks promising for direct maritime connections between Ireland and continental Europe. These services are expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting trade, reducing complexity, and enhancing supply chain efficiency in the years ahead.
